Us & them – how we talk about diversity and inclusion, and welcome new audiences into our venues
As a sector, arts and entertainment (especially subsidised arts and entertainment) is always striving to ‘diversify’ and engage ‘hard to reach’ audiences. In this session, we will explore the language used when talking to, and about, potential audiences, and our assumptions about those groups/demographics (based on age, class, ethnicity, ability, or gender, for example) within our communities who do not engage actively with our organisations. How can we become more welcoming to those people who are currently marginalised by barriers that our organisations inadvertently have in place? And how can we make this truly welcoming approach integral to the work that we do?
Join speakers Sarah Frost (Spektrix), Harpreet Kaur (Harpreet Kaur Creative), and Richard Loftus (Town Hall Symphony Hall) for this panel discussion as we discuss how, as a sector, we ensure that audience development, and reporting back to funders and stakeholders on audience diversity, is undertaken in a meaningful way, both for the organisations and their audiences.
